The Electronic Journal of e-Learning (EJEL) provides perspectives on topics relevant to the study, implementation and management of e-learning initiatives. Volume 11 Issue 2, published in June 2013, includes a selection of papers which demonstrate the widening range of possibilities for e-learning.
Technologies continue to develop and change, and issues of adoption and innovation persist. Like any other technologies, e-learning hardware and software is best used when it is introduced to solve a real problem which has been carefully thought through. The articles in this EJEL issue edited by Roy Williams show that there is tremendous promise and opportunity, but there are no quick fixes, and no one-size-fits all solutions.
EJEL has published regular issues since 2003 and averages between 3 and 4 issues a year.
The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is preparing to launch the first issue of a new open access online scholarly journal that aims to provide a forum for practitioners and academics working in education and development to share knowledge and experience.
The “Journal of Learning for Development” (JL4D) is a publication devoted to innovation in learning, in particular but not exclusively open and distance learning, and its contribution to development. Content will include interventions that change social and/or economic relations, especially in terms of improving equity.
With a view to showcasing practical application to development contexts, this new e-journal will publish empirical research and case studies from researchers, scholars and practitioners, and will seek to engage a broad audience across that spectrum. It aims to encourage contributors starting their careers, as well as to publish the work of established and senior scholars from the Commonwealth and beyond.
JL4D expects to publish its inaugural issue late in 2013. Submissions are now being accepted. Further details can be found in the brochure and in the magazine’s website.
Working Together is a kit with a range of games and activities to help parents/ carers engage with children’s learning in the early school years.
Working Together is part of a strategy of the British government’s Department for Education to increase parental engagement in their child’s learning and development. The kit includes:
- A children’s folded-paper ‘chatterbox’ game to make - designed to prompt questions and activities with the child
- A card game with questions to ask the child about school and what they are learning
- A bookmark to colour in and keep
- A handy wall chart and stickers to help parents record and reward the child's learning progress, month by month

Agrega2 is an OER platform developed by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, the Autonomous Communities and Red.es.
The Agrega2 platform aggregates the pre-college educational digital repositories of all the Ministries of Education of the Spanish Autonomous Communities. The contents are organised according to the curriculum and are ready to be downloaded and used by teachers and students.
The platform has access nodes in all the Ministries of Education of the Autonomous Communities (CCAA) and the Institute of Educational Technology (ITE) and Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECD).
MDX (Learning Materials Online) is a cooperative repository offering open education resources produced by several universities from Catalonia and the Valencian Community (Spain).
The purpose of MDX is to make the participant institutions’ teaching production more visible and widespread, thus contributing to educational innovation, on the one hand, and free access to knowledge on the other.
The aims of MDX are:
- To facilitate the management of teaching materials and objects produced by the universities by arranging them and integrating them within a common server.
- To offer the academic staff of the participating universities a resource server that allows the materials produced to be filed and subsequently retrieved.
- To provide users with permanent, simple and fast access to the teaching production of member organisations.
- To add value to the materials collected through elements such as the permanent address, standardised citations or consultation data.
- To establish and apply preservation mechanisms in order to ensure the durability of the materials.
- To encourage the publishing and editing of teaching materials in electronic formats.

Bridging the gap between technology and learning, “Pebblegogy” is a book aiming to help tutors and learning designers who use the PebblePad online platform to create meaningful activities that will support their curricula.
“Pebblegogy” is addressed to those new to PebblePad who want practical guidance in making best use of this personal learning space. For those who are already experts, the book offers a rich source of inspiration for designing engaging and motivating learning experiences with PebblePad.
PebblePad has now been used for over eight years by over 100 organisations, and the second half of the book presents a rich collection of learning designs resulting from the contributions and collaborations of more than 40 practitioners from the UK and Australia.
A companion website provides a wealth of further information such as activities and presentations. Each of the activities described is accompanied by guidelines usage covering, for example, tutor complexity, student’s ability to use PebblePad, and recommended number of students participating.
