The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is an ambitious project launched in April 2013 with the aim to bring together and make freely available to the world the resources from libraries, archives and museums across the United States.
The DPLA offers a single point of access to millions of items, from photographs to manuscripts, books, sounds, moving images and more. Users can browse and search the collections by timeline, map, format, and topic; save items to customized lists and share their lists with others. Users can also explore digital exhibitions curated by the DPLA’s content partners and staff.
The DPLA aims to expand this crucial realm of openly available materials, and make those riches more easily discovered and more widely usable and used, through its three main elements:
- First, an easy-to-use portal where anyone can access collections and search through them using novel and powerful techniques, including by place and time.
- Second, a sophisticated technical platform that will make those millions of items available in ways so that others can build creative and transformative applications upon them, such as smartphone apps.
- Third, along with like-minded institutions and individuals the DPLA will seek innovative means to make more cultural and scientific content openly available, and it will advocate for a strong public option for reading and research in the twenty-first century.
Ressources pédagogiques en ligne de la BNF
BNF Classes est le site de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France contenant plusieurs milliers de ressources pédagogiques gratuites en ligne.
Ce nouveau site mis en oeuvre par la Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) offre en ligne des livres, des vidéos et conférences, des ressources photographiques, des jeux et ateliers éducatifs mais aussi de nombreux dossiers sur des sujets aussi divers que la presse, la littérature, les arts, l'architecture, la photograhie ou encore la cartographie.
La BNF offre des ressources en ligne depuis 1996 mais elle a mis à une disposition de son site consacré aux ressources pédagogiques en décembre 2012. Le site s'était progressivement étoffé et diversifié au point qu'il devenait nécessaire d'en revoir profondément la conception, tout en permettant à chacun d'y retrouver ses habitudes et bien entendu ses favoris.

La bibliothèque Hélène offre plus de 7.400 ouvrages numériques accessibles aux personnes déficientes visuelles. Sur inscription, chaque personne peut télécharger librement et sans redevance, des ouvrages numériques adaptés et répondant à la norme DAISY (Digital Accessible Information SYstem).
Biblioteca Sonora Digital
A Biblioteca Sonora Digital é um repositório electrónico, acessível em linha, de fonogramas não musicais (“livros falados” ou áudio livros) produzidos e disponibilizados pela Biblioteca Sonora da Biblioteca Pública Municipal do Porto. O acesso à Biblioteca Sonora Digital é gratuito, mas restrito – autenticação requerida – exclusivamente a cidadãos portadores de deficiência visual: cegos e amblíopes.
The LibrarySchool
The LibrarySchool initiative was started some years ago within the world of the public libraries. In a society in transition, and in a time where more has to be done with less, the LibrarySchool wants to offer a for ‘high potentials’ within the library sector to develop new products. Initiator Bruynzeels hopes the community will become ‘a breeding ground for new ideas and innovations, where everybody learns from each other and is student and teacher at the same time’. The LibrarySchool will train future innovators but is also a community where students and colleagues share knowledge and gain new insights and so take library innovation forward. By establishing a direct link with everyday library practice, the School contributes to enhancing the innovative capacity of the sector as a whole.
The Difference that Makes a Difference: an interdisciplinary workshop on information and technology
As we move further into the ‘information age’, we need to make the bridge between information of the information technologist and understanding of information in other disciplines. As researchers and practitioners in diverse fields grapple with an understanding of information – what it is, how it can be modelled and tools for coping with it – now more than ever is the time to share insights and bring some clarity and coherence to these differing perspectives.
Each session focuses on the way in which information is conceptualised within a different set of disciplines – philosophy, science, business/education and social science. In each case, the relationship between technical disciplines and these other fields is taken to be paramount. The goal of the workshop at each stage is to create conversations across disciplines, but especially between technical and non-technical disciplines.

BOBCATSSS is an annual symposium organised by students at a number of universities in Europe. It takes place under the auspieces of EUCLID (European Association for Library and Information Education and Research) and deals with themes from library and information science.
