An e-Learning Programme for South Yorkshire

02 December 2002
A six-year e-Learning Programme aims to boost learning and skills in South Yorkshire from 2002 to 2007 by helping more people to be trained on computers at school, college, home, work and in the community. The e-sy.info Programme is being co-ordinated through a partnership of the four Local Authorities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield as well as the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) South Yorkshire.

Although investment in ICT infrastructure plays a major role in the project, training and helping people access high quality education is the priority of e-sy.info . Christine Lewis, Project Director said “we are training our teachers to use this new technology to transform the way they can deliver the curriculum. We are putting a learning environment into libraries and small local businesses to make this learning available to people who do not have access to computers.”

Through this initiative, over £50m will be spent on computer infrastructure, ICT training and skills training. Over 140 educational and training institutions will be upgraded with laptops and computers and networked using wireless technology.

The project aims to help 37,000 people to access e-learning, and 270 trainers will be trained. Also, Computer learning centres and pods (dedicated learning modules) will be provided to small businesses.

4. offrir des formations scientifiques et pédagogiques dans le cadre de Comenius 3.2;
5. promouvoir la dimension européenne à travers l'enseignement de l'astronomie (observation du firmament, histoire de cette discipline scientifique et développements actuels liées au travail de l'Agence Spatiale Européenne).

German Hands-on Modern Information Technologies Teacher Training Scheme

01 December 2002
The project aims at giving training opportunities for German language teacher in the application of the new ICTs.
The ''German Hands-on Modern Information Technologies Teacher Training Scheme'' (GEH-MIT) project aims at the development of a course and the respective course material, offering training opportunities both for German language teachers in schools and student teachers at language institutes of Higher Education, with the main subject being the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the everyday teaching.

The project is based on close cooperation between school teachers and teacher trainers, and addreses the needs of teachers of German as a Foreign Language and those of the respective student teachers and their educators. GEH-MIT project aims at enhancing teachers' professional skills in the important field of European languages, both in ICT application in everyday teaching and in modern pedagogical approaches, by implementing a new methodology and by designing a new curriculum of training and training material.

This new methodology has four constituent parts: the creation of a link between theory and practice; the continuous evaluation, design and redesign of the produced training material; the adoption of a hands-on approach to the training curricula in modern technology; and the active participation of the teachers in the design of the training material.

Thematically, the project aims to go beyond traditional approaches, which focus on simple provision of computer knowledge. The main outcome will be a modern and flexible training scheme and materials for teachers.

School Leaders

16 Januari 2003
Central to the process of managing the change and creating the climate of acceptance and furtherance of the integration of new pedagogical practices involving the use of ICT into the educational establishment, is the role of the school leader.
The impact of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on education is really only in its infancy. While major investments have been made over the past five years in equipping schools with the relevant hardware infrastructures and Internet access, the real work is now only beginning. This involves trying to understand the nature of the technology on offer to us as educators, the pedagogical possibilities it opens up to us and its potential for communication. These issues are integral to the eLearning action plan of the European Commission, now entering its second phase.

Coupled with the potentials of the medium come the challenges. Among these are the ubiquitous nature of future learning environments, the ready availability of knowledge resources and the change that such items bring to the role of schools, teachers and learners. All of this, of course, is taking place against a background of a much wider societal change in the European context that is also impacting in a major way on educational establishments.

Central to the process of managing the change and creating the climate of acceptance and furtherance of the integration of new pedagogical practices involving the use of ICT into the educational establishment, is the role of the school leader. Without their support and vision the process of acceptance and integration becomes more difficult as traditionally they are regarded as a conservative rather than a proactive group in educational change. This needs to change so that the school leaders become agents of change, and in order for this to happen, there needs to be more emphasis on raising the awareness of school leaders to the issues involved.

Up to now the school leaders have been a rather neglected group in the training processes for educational technology, although this is now beginning to change in a number of European countries. I would argue that there is a major need of training models for school leaders, to remedy their lack of confidence, skills and understanding in this regard. Among the objectives of such training I would see some of the following issues although this list is by no means exhaustive:

1. School leaders and the future. – The development of Vision

2. ICT and new pedagogies. An examination of how ICT changes the pedagogic practices within a school.

3. ICT in a community context. The changing relationships between school and local communities.

4. Virtual Schools – Real Buildings. An examination of the issues behind managing a school where a part of its activities take place in cyberspace.

5. Lifelong learning

What is needed now in the development of a community of practice, is the identification across Europe of those school leaders who are interested in becoming – or are - the entrepreneurs of ICT usage in educational practice and who will discuss the relevant competencies that need to be developed for the future. Change is never easy, but change without mastery or understanding is impossible.Anne Gilleran, has worked in the field of education since 1972, firstly as a lecturer in counselling theories and techniques, then as a guidance counsellor and teacher. For ten years she was a school principal in Dublin, Ireland. Since April 2001, she has worked at the European Schoolnet (EUN) where she coordinates the School Managers Centre (SMC).

Mensch - Denk - Mal. Gemeinsames Erinnern: Auseinandersetzung mit Kriegsdenkmälern und Kriegsspuren in Europa

30 November 2002
It aims at contributing to the development of the european citicenship through historic and artictic analysis of history.

Crucial benchmarks in the three-year working period of the project include:

- collection of local information and scrutiny of particularly positive/negative cases

Co-operation between schools and parents in relation

30 November 2002
The project aims at making teachers aware of the changing role of parents with a view
of increasing autonomy of schools.
Often parents are still primarily seen as clients and not as responsible partners, professionals, potential co-developers and evaluators of schools.

The project is designed for three years. It sets out to target the following specific objectives:

- to improve cooperation between schools and parents to allow the latter to take an active role in the development of school quality and to support children's responsibility for self-guided learning
- to compare national variations in practice regarding the role of parents in (pre-) primary and secondary schools in intercultural contexts
- to collect and document examples of good practice
- to point out areas where changes and measures of support are required
- to develop materials for initial and in-service training

The materials to be produced include a CD-ROM and accompanying booklets.

The materials will be disseminated at national workshops.
