Announcement board
“Language Learning and Social Media:6 key dialogues”(LS6) was offered the possibility of disseminating its innovative approach and ongoing work in the field of language learning at a workshop the Euproean Commission is organising at Expolangues 2012. The Expolangues fair is an international event in the field of language learning and takes place in Paris from February 1st to 4th.
On the 2nd of February, the European Commission is organising a full day of events about its ongoing work in language learning which will include presentations on the future programme, the various initiatives of the Multilingualism unit, a round table with a panel of experts and last but not least a workshop with projects. The workhop will take place between 13h and 14h15 and present
1) a short introduction, 2) three projects presenting their results, pedagogical approach, methodologies, and impact and 3) a session of questions and answers
Moreover, beyond the workshop contribution, the LS6 project will also be present at the official EC stand the four days of the fair and initiate interactive activities concerning language learning and social media. The idea is to invite expo-visitors and interested volunteers to share their thoughts, stories, testimonies… about meaningful language learning processes and social media (as promoted within the LS6 project). The object is to move the visitor from a viewer to a contributor through
- tweets or blog posts (text-based), 60 second video clips, short audio comments, screencasts as commented activities on a website
All these contributions are disseminated instantly via our dica-lab LS6 Blog with the request/option for further commenting and extending the contributions on the site.
It would be great meeting you in Paris or on our blog. Please find the programme attached to this post
Between February and July 2011 we have run a pan-European competition to identify top practices of social media use in formal language learning contexts. A website was set up for the needs of the competition and the selection commitee has chosen 10 best practices out of approximately 80 applications submitted. The ten best practices are displayed here
The second round of selection has been undertaken to identify the best practice among the ten. It was very difficult for the judges to select the winner from so many worthy and wonderful practices. Our sincere congratulation goes to the winner, teacher Ceri Anwen James in a Welsh-medium school Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg from Vale of Glamorgan, Wales (UK). In her quest for combining language learning and social media use, she has created an integrated website for German learning students. The more detailed winner announcement is here and if you want to know more about the best practice, visit here. The winner will be rewarded with a 1000€ prize, of technical equipment for her choice, plus all expenses covered to travel to Warsaw in october 2012 for the awarding ceremony.
Debates
Based on an overarching question of " How language teacher training should be in the 21st century",
we are pleased to announce a upcoming webinar session on Wednesday 30th November 2011,
organised by ENS de Lyon-Ifé.
The poster is here
Date :
Wednesday November 30th, 2011 time 14:00-15:00 Central European Time(GMT+1)
Place:
Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS-Lyon) and Broadcast Live via Elluminate
As screens play a growing part in our daily communication, as meeting possilbities have increased with social networks, how shall we prompt and train our teachers to take advantage of the potential of these tools and appliations in their language classrooms and beyond? Some of questions will be discussed throughout the webinar session.
Training for new teachers:
- How shall we connect this new type of training to the more traditional skills which are also still required and relevant?
- How much information and communication technology (ICT) should be an integral part of language teachers’ training and what are our pedagogical aims?
Continuing education for current teachers (“in-service” training):
- How can we create a love for the integration of technology?
- What are the new skills teachers need to learn to feel comfortable about technology choices for language learning and teaching?
- Can continuing education induce changes in practice?
- Are training courses that focus solely on the technological aspect of tools and applications useful?
An interactive debate with four leading researchers in the field of language teacher training will address insightful answers to these questions drawn by their own specific professional experiences.
The invited speakers:
Christine Develotte, ENS de Lyon-Ifé , France
Mirjam Hauck, Open University, UK
Melinda Dooly, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona ,Spain
