Catherine Ngugi wins fellowship for the International GUIDE Conference

20 Kesäkuu 2013

Catherine Ngugi, Project Director of the Kenya-based initiative OER Africa, has been awarded a fellowship to attend the 6th International GUIDE Conference, to be held in Athens (Greece) on October 3-4, 2013.

The GUIDE Association has awarded a fellowship to Catherine Ngugi, who will present the paper “Higher Education in a Time of Economic Crisis: What Possibilities for Open Educational Resources (OER)?”.

Ngugi will introduce the Kenya-based organization OER Africa, whose goal is to support higher education institutions in Africa in the use of OER as means to improve teaching and learning. As Project Director of the initiative she will give us an insight of how OER has provided an alternative to present and future education in Africa.

According to her study, developing skilled workforce and acting as an active contributor to the global knowledge economy comes hand in hand with the importance of HE in Africa. Catherine will address the emerging challenges HE has to overcome despite the negative economic environment. She will also allude to the role of MOOCs and OERs in relation to the economic global crisis.

In January 2005, Ngugi established the African Virtual University’s Research & Innovation Facility (RIF) and managed it until September 2007. During this period, the RIF hosted two OER projects and launched a Pan-African pilot study on the use of OER in African universities.

GUIDE’s fellowship to a speaker from a developing country, that covers participation expenses, has been awarded to Ngugi’s paper due to its originality and innovativeness, as well as the relevance to the conference themes.

Tracking the Economic Value of Embedded Digital Technology: A Supply-Side Methodology

08 Kesäkuu 2011

This methodological report indicates a way forward in estimating the economic role of embedded digital technology (EDT) from the supply side. We propose a more holistic approach to the production and diffusion of ICT and we develop the foundation of a methodology that would ultimately take into account the overall use and impact of embedded digital technology in the productive process.
Technological, economic and statistical arguments support our approach. Current technological development no longer accommodates clear borderlines between ICT and non-ICT goods or between general purpose computers and embedded digital devices.
