Call for interest - an OER for training teacher trainers

22 abril 2013

The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) invites expressions of interest for producing courseware in the form of an open educational resource for training teacher trainers in high quality open, distance and online learning. The target group for this call is an institution or consortium of actors/ institutions and the initial focus of the project is Africa.

Open, distance and online learning is rapidly expanding in universities and colleges in Africa and Asia, but faculty training has not caught up with the speed of development. According to the African Union Commission, the number of new teachers required in Africa by the year 2015 is estimated to be 3.6 million.

Online training using OERs will facilitate mass training of teacher trainers, which again will facilitate trained teachers in filling the huge gap in demand for educators in Africa. By using OERs, courseware can be adapted to different cultures and languages.

The OER/ courseware to receive an ICDE grant should focus on the needs of teacher trainers to deliver high quality faculty training in open and distance/ online learning. The first regional area of priority should be Africa. A regional focus on Asia will be considered when the project has delivered.

The expressions of interest must be submitted to the ICDE Secretariat, icde@icde.org by Friday 31 May 2013. ICDE will invite a smaller selection of applicants to deliver a bid in the form of a project proposal. One successful bidder will be invited to enter into a contract with ICDE.  The value of the grant is USD 8,500.

CHEPS 2012 International Conference New Perspectives in Higher Education and Regional Development

26 Septiembre 2012

Dynamic processes of knowledge infrastructures, innovative businesses and regions

Why do universities choose to contribute to regional economic development? Universities have many assets and facilities that can help drive regional economic development, but that is for the majority of higher education institutions that have the university name not a central part of what they do.

Central to the idea of a university is of independent, abstract learning and knowledge creation in a global knowledge commons, so why would universities tie themselves and be limited by opportunities for co-operation within the particular territory in which they are located? As universities are increasingly strategically managed to achieve their core goals, understanding why universities might choose to work with regions is essential to understanding the contributions that they can potentially make to economic development in general and recovery from the current economic crisis.

EFMD - CEIBS Conference on Innovative Business in China and Europe (followed by EQUIS, EPAS & DAF seminars)

01 agosto 2012

The development and growth of China over the last 15 years has been remarkable and has had a profound impact on the global economy. However with continued growth comes the challenge of maintaining this in the future. China is looking to shift from being the manufacturing powerhouse of the world to being a centre of innovation and ideas and the 2012 CEIBS-EFMD conference in Beijing (November 29-30) will focus on Innovative Business in China and Europe.

Questions that will be discussed and explored during the conference will include:

  • What is the status of innovation in China?
  • How innovative are Chinese companies that have gone global?
  • What are the Chinese government's innovation policies?
  • Which are the implications of innovative business practices on human resources?
  • How open are European companies to innovation?
  • How can European companies relate to China?
  • Does China have the talent available to shift towards an innovation driven economy?
  • What does this mean for business schools and companies?

All of these issues are relevant to companies, business schools, faculty and policy makers with an interest in China's and Europe's economic growth and cooperation. A variety of corporate and academic speakers will provide input and lead discussions around innovative business. The conference programme will be based on the expertise of the Centre on China Innovation at CEIBS. The 2012 CEIBS-EFMD conference will take place on the Beijing campus of CEIBS on 29-30 November and will be followed by EFMD introductory accreditation seminars which are highlighted below.

This conference is organised in the framework of the EU-China Business Management Training (BMT) Project, http://www.ceibs.edu/bmt/, funded by the European Union.

eLearning Africa 2012. The Call for Papers is open!

06 Octubre 2011

eLearning Africa is the premier gathering place for all experts and stakeholders engaged or interested in ICT-based education, training and development on the African continent. Everyone concerned with eLearning in Africa is welcome to share and learn. Deadline for receipt of all proposals is Friday, December 9th, 2011.

We encourage practitioners and academics engaged in an African context to apply by submitting a proposal for eLA 2012, taking place from May 23rd to 25th in Cotonou, Benin. Please note that successful applicants will be offered a significantly reduced conference registration fee.

You are invited to submit proposals for any of the following:

Each type of submission has a specific format; please choose the one you would like to use and fill in the form accordingly.

Deadline for receipt of all proposals is Friday, December 9th, 2011.

We will be in contact by the end of March 2012 to let you know if your proposal has been accepted.

Selection Process

The content selection process is overseen by the Conference Organising Committee and guided by the feedback we receive from the Conference Advisory Committees and associated organisations. Our experience has been that we receive many more proposals and ideas than we can include, and as a general rule, approximately one third of all proposals received are accepted.

Selection is made on the basis of the proposal's relevance to the conference themes, the experience and knowledge of the applicants, the practicalities of including the proposal within the conference format and a combination of the proposal's innovativeness and practical value to conference participants.

Kindly note that we will only accept high quality papers and presentations. For us quality is
defined by papers that:

  • are clearly grounded in context
  • provide conceptual clarity
  • are supported by clear reasoning
  • are backed up with evidence
  • are relevant for an African context
  • are useful for practitioners, policymakers and prospective partners

and presentations that:

  • are clear, concise, inspiring and interactive
  • are adequately supported by relevant slides or other visuals
  • provoke and invite discussions with the audience and other speakers.

Please note that priority is given to African-based speakers for proposals being made on behalf of initiatives undertaken on the Continent.
