Biography
Dr Julia Gillen is Senior Lecturer at the Literacy Research Centre, Lancaster University. She is researching literacy, language and learning in both informal and formal settings. She is fascinated by developing appropriate methodologies for digital contexts. With C.A. Cameron, University of British Columbia she co-directs the project, "A Day in the Life": an international ecocultural study of two-year-old girls. . Recently funded external projects include The Discourse of the School Dinners Debate (ESRC, P.I. Guy Cook, Open University) and Interactive whiteboards as pedagogic tools in primary classrooms (ESRC, P.I. Neil Mercer, University of Cambridge.) Recent publications include: Gillen, J. (2009) Literacy practices in Schome Park: a virtual literacy ethnography. Journal of Research in Reading 32 (1) 57-74 and Gillen, J. (2007) Derwent's Doors: Creative Acts. Mind, Culture and Activity 14 (3) 150-159. Julia Gillen is co-editor of the Journal of Early Childhood Literacy.
